Amazon and AWS in Quantum: Braket and the Ocelot Cat Qubit Chip

Updated | 4 min read | QUANTUM (QNT) community

What Amazon builds

Amazon Web Services does two different things in quantum, and it helps to keep them apart. The first is a cloud marketplace. Amazon Braket is a fully managed service where customers can reach quantum hardware from third parties, plus simulators and software tools. The second is its own hardware research, done at the AWS Center for Quantum Computing at Caltech, which produced a prototype chip called Ocelot.

Braket: the cloud storefront

The Braket product page lists gate based superconducting machines from IQM and Rigetti, trapped ion machines from AQT and IonQ, and neutral atom machines from QuEra. It also describes priority access for hybrid quantum and classical work, a software kit, workflow management, a reservation feature called Braket Direct, and an advisory program called Quantum Embark for newcomers. The page does not mention Ocelot, and the Amazon announcement page, which calls Ocelot a prototype, does not say it is rentable through Braket. Treat any claim that you can run on Ocelot today as unverified. If you want to try real machines, see the hardware access guide and how to try a quantum computer online.

Ocelot: the milestone

AWS unveiled Ocelot on February 27, 2025 (the Amazon announcement page itself carries no date, so the date comes from Info-Tech's coverage). According to AWS, the chip is built from two silicon microchips, each about one square centimeter, bonded one on top of the other. It has 14 core components: five data qubits that are cat qubits, five buffer circuits that stabilize them, and four extra qubits used to detect errors. The oscillators use tantalum thin films with a processing method AWS developed. AWS says the results were published in a peer reviewed Nature paper.

The headline claim is cost. AWS says its approach could cut the cost of quantum error correction by up to 90 percent compared with current approaches, that a full scale machine might need as little as one tenth of the resources of standard approaches, and that it could pull a practical machine forward by up to five years. AWS is careful to call these estimates and beliefs rather than proven results, and it says Ocelot is still a prototype with several more stages of scaling ahead. That caution is the right way to read the numbers.

Why cat qubits matter

A cat qubit is built so that one kind of error, bit flips, is suppressed by design, leaving mostly phase flips. That makes the error correcting code on top simpler, so fewer physical parts are needed per reliable logical qubit. The idea is explained in the cat qubit guide, where the French company Alice and Bob pursues a related path. The general problem is covered in the error correction primer. AWS says it treated error correction as the top design requirement from the start rather than bolting it on later, and it compares the multi year approach to how it built its Graviton processors.

Strategy: cloud first, full stack as a long bet

Amazon is best described as a cloud aggregator with a long term hardware bet. Braket lets AWS earn from the whole industry without picking a winning qubit type. Ocelot is a research bet that, if it scales, would let AWS sell its own machine inside the same cloud. Target uses named by AWS include drug discovery, new materials and financial risk modelling, all of which are still research stage fields (see the use cases guide).

What to watch

Where this fits for QNT readers

Big tech headlines can lift attention for anything quantum themed, including a memecoin, but attention is not value. QNT is an independent community token with no link to Amazon or to Quantinuum Ltd. Frequently asked questions

What is Amazon Braket?

A managed AWS service that gives customers access to quantum computers from other companies, plus simulators and software tools. The page reviewed lists IQM, Rigetti, AQT, IonQ and QuEra.

What is Ocelot?

A prototype quantum chip from AWS built around cat qubits, with five data qubits, five buffer circuits and four error detecting qubits, announced in February 2025.

Can I run programs on Ocelot through Braket?

The sources reviewed do not say so. Check the current Braket device list before assuming it.

Is the 90 percent cost saving proven?

No. AWS presents it as an estimate for future chips built on the architecture and calls Ocelot a prototype.

Is the QNT memecoin connected to Amazon?

No. It is an independent community token with no link to Amazon, AWS or Quantinuum Ltd.
