IBM sets 2029 target for a large scale fault tolerant quantum computer

| Source: IBM Quantum blog

What the source says. IBM published an updated roadmap and said that by 2029 it will deliver IBM Quantum Starling, a fault tolerant quantum computer able to run circuits of 100 million gates on 200 logical qubits, built at its Poughkeepsie, New York facility.

Why it matters. A target is not a delivered machine. The useful part is the unit: logical qubits and gate counts, not raw qubit counts. Compare it with the roughly 1 million noisy qubits Google estimates for breaking RSA-2048 (below) to see how far apart today's plans and cryptographic risk still are.

Google estimates RSA-2048 could fall to under 1 million noisy qubits

| Source: Google Security Blog

What the source says. Google researchers published a preprint showing that 2048 bit RSA could theoretically be broken by a quantum computer with 1 million noisy qubits running for one week, a 20 fold decrease from their 2019 estimate. The paper is arXiv:2505.15917 by Craig Gidney.

Why it matters. Estimates for the quantum cost of breaking public key cryptography keep falling as algorithms improve, even while hardware is far short. That trend, not any single machine, is why migration planning has started. Solana and Bitcoin signatures use elliptic curves, a different problem from RSA but one that faces the same class of attack.

Google unveils Willow and error correction that improves as it scales

| Source: Google blog and Nature

What the source says. Google announced Willow, a 105 qubit chip, and reported error correction results where errors fell as the code grew, described as 'below threshold'. The research was published in Nature (https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-024-08449-y).

Why it matters. Below threshold behaviour is the property error correction needs in order to scale at all, so it is a milestone for the field. It is a demonstration on one logical qubit memory, not a machine that can break encryption.

NIST publishes the first three post-quantum cryptography standards

| Source: NIST

What the source says. NIST finalised FIPS 203 (ML-KEM, key encapsulation), FIPS 204 (ML-DSA, digital signatures) and FIPS 205 (SLH-DSA, hash based signatures), and encouraged administrators to start migrating.

Why it matters. These are the standards blockchains would adopt for quantum resistant signatures. Chains differ in how they will upgrade, see our comparison of Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana plans. Nothing about QNT changes: it inherits whatever Solana does.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the news items come from?

Each item links to a primary source such as IBM, Google, NIST or a peer reviewed paper. The comment under it is our own.

Does quantum news move the QNT price?

It can move attention, because the token has a quantum theme, but QNT has no link to any quantum company or technology. Treat it as a reason for caution, not a signal.
