Frequently asked questions

What is quantum computing?

Quantum computing uses quantum mechanics, through units called qubits, to process information in ways classical computers cannot efficiently imitate for certain problems.

What is a qubit?

A qubit is the basic unit of quantum information. Unlike a bit, which is 0 or 1, a qubit can be in a combination of both states until it is measured.

What is superposition?

Superposition means a quantum system can be in a combination of states at once. Measuring it gives one definite result, with probabilities set by the combination.

What is quantum entanglement?

Entanglement is a link between qubits so that their measured results are correlated in ways classical objects cannot reproduce. It is a key resource in quantum algorithms.

How is a quantum computer different from a normal computer?

A normal computer uses bits and logic gates. A quantum computer uses qubits and quantum gates, which suits specific problems rather than everyday tasks.

Are quantum computers faster at everything?

No. They are expected to help with certain problems, such as simulating molecules or factoring large numbers, and are not faster at ordinary tasks like browsing or word processing.

Do quantum computers try every answer at once?

That is a common myth. Quantum algorithms use interference to boost the chance of correct answers, and this only works for specific problem structures.

What is quantum advantage?

Quantum advantage means a quantum computer performs a useful task better than the best known classical method. It is different from a one-off demonstration.

What is quantum supremacy?

Quantum supremacy is an older term for a quantum machine completing some task beyond what classical computers can do in practical time, even if the task has little real world use.

What is quantum error correction?

Qubits are fragile and make errors. Error correction spreads one logical qubit across many physical qubits so errors can be detected and fixed.

Why are quantum computers kept so cold?

Some designs, such as superconducting qubits, need extremely low temperatures to reduce noise and keep fragile quantum states from falling apart.

What is NISQ?

NISQ means noisy intermediate-scale quantum. It describes today's machines, which have limited qubits and no full error correction.

What are the main types of quantum computers?

Common approaches include superconducting circuits, trapped ions, neutral atoms and photonics. Each has different strengths and engineering challenges.

What is the difference between gate model and annealing?

Gate model machines run general circuits of quantum gates. Annealers are specialized for optimization problems and are not general purpose.

What is Shor's algorithm?

Shor's algorithm is a quantum algorithm that can factor large integers and solve related problems efficiently. A large enough quantum computer running it would threaten RSA and elliptic curve cryptography.

What is Grover's algorithm?

Grover's algorithm speeds up unstructured search by a quadratic factor. It affects symmetric keys and hashes mildly, usually handled by using larger sizes.

Can quantum computers break Bitcoin?

A large, error-corrected quantum computer could in principle forge signatures made with elliptic curve cryptography. No such machine exists today.

Can quantum computers break Solana?

Solana signatures use Ed25519, an elliptic curve scheme, so the same class of long term risk applies. It would need a far more powerful machine than exists today.

Do quantum computers threaten mining or hashing?

Much less. Grover's algorithm gives only a quadratic speedup against hash functions, so the impact on hashing is generally considered manageable.

Is today's quantum computer a danger to crypto?

Current machines are far too small and error prone to break real cryptographic keys. The concern is about future machines.

What is post-quantum cryptography?

Post-quantum cryptography means encryption and signature methods designed to resist attacks from both classical and quantum computers.

Are there official post-quantum standards?

Yes. In 2024 the US standards body NIST published its first post-quantum cryptography standards, including lattice based key exchange and signature schemes.

What is harvest now, decrypt later?

It is the idea that an attacker records encrypted data today and decrypts it once a powerful quantum computer exists. It matters for secrets that must stay private for many years.

What is quantum key distribution?

Quantum key distribution uses quantum properties of light to share encryption keys, with eavesdropping detectable. It is different from post-quantum cryptography, which runs on ordinary computers.

When will quantum computers be powerful enough to break encryption?

Nobody knows. Estimates vary widely and depend on progress in error correction, so treat any specific date with caution.

What can quantum computers do today?

Today's machines are used for research, experiments and early tests in chemistry, optimization and machine learning. Practical, repeatable advantage is still limited.

What are the likely uses of quantum computing?

Leading candidates are simulating molecules and materials, certain optimization problems and cryptanalysis. Finance and drug discovery are active research areas.

Which companies work on quantum computing?

Many technology companies, startups and research labs do. See the companies guide for an overview. Mentioning a company here is not an endorsement.

Can I try a quantum computer myself?

Yes. Several providers offer free cloud access to small quantum computers and simulators, with tutorials for beginners.

Do I need physics knowledge to learn quantum computing?

Not to get started. Basic ideas such as qubits, gates and measurement can be learned with simple examples, and the math deepens as you go.

What is quantum machine learning?

It is research into using quantum computers for machine learning tasks. Real world advantages are still an open question.

What is a quantum network or quantum internet?

It is a proposed network that links quantum devices by transmitting quantum states, for example to share entanglement over distance.

What is quantum sensing?

Quantum sensing uses quantum effects to measure things such as magnetic fields, time or gravity with very high precision. It already has practical uses.

Does a quantum themed token use quantum technology?

Not necessarily. A theme token like QUANTUM (QNT) borrows the name and idea of the sector and gives you no access to quantum hardware.

Is QUANTUM (QNT) related to the quantum company Quantinuum Ltd?

No. QNT is an independent community memecoin, not affiliated with Quantinuum Ltd.
