Telecom Quantum Pilots: Deutsche Telekom, BT, SK Telecom and Others, Sorted by Evidence
What kind of quantum are telecoms testing?
Telecom operators are the one industry where quantum work is mostly about networks and security, not number crunching. There are three buckets. First, quantum key distribution (QKD), which uses photons to share encryption keys (QKD explained). Second, quantum networking, meaning moving fragile quantum states or entanglement over fiber (quantum networks). Third, ordinary quantum or hybrid computing for network optimization. A fourth topic, post-quantum encryption, is software on normal hardware and is covered in QKD vs post-quantum cryptography.
The wide view: lots of announcements, few metrics
An RCR Wireless article dated 9 April 2026 reports a Q-Beat tracker figure (through June 2025) of 75 telco quantum deployments announced by 29 operators, of which 35% were only announced, about a quarter launched and 28% were in trial or proof-of-concept stage. It also cites a GSMA survey of 100 operators: 60% have quantum on a roadmap and 12% plan deployment within 12 months, with security the first priority and network efficiency second. Note the gap between "announced" and "working". The same article observes that most results are company claims without published metrics.
Deutsche Telekom: teleportation on a live network
RCR Wireless reports a Deutsche Telekom trial with Qunnect, run by T-Labs, in which qubits were teleported across a 30 km commercial fiber loop in Berlin alongside regular data traffic, with a reported average accuracy of 90%. The article gives no year in the passage we read and does not explain how the 90% was measured, which comes from a company statement. Why it matters: showing quantum signals coexisting with normal traffic on real fiber is a genuine engineering step. Why caution: one loop is a demo, not a service, and 90% fidelity is not high enough for many uses without improvement. Teleportation here moves a quantum state, not matter or faster-than-light messages. Related reading: metropolitan quantum networks today and Qunnect.
BT: a metro QKD network and a cautious voice
RCR lists BT projects including a QKD-secured metro network with Toshiba and a quantum-safe VPN with Fortinet and Arquit Quantum. It quotes BT's Andrew Lord saying commercial use cases may be 5 to 10 years away. That is a notably sober timeline from someone running the work, and it is worth more than a glossy launch claim.
SK Telecom: standards and QKD services
A TelecomTV article dated 19 July 2022 reports that two SK Telecom quantum cryptography technologies were accepted as new work items for international standardisation at the ITU-T. One is a software-defined control system to manage existing and QKD networks together across multiple vendors. The other is a QKD network federation idea, likened to international roaming. The same piece mentions earlier work: QKD as a service with Equinix, pilot QKD infrastructure for 17 institutions, and a 2020 quantum-secured smart plant and banking app. Being accepted as a work item is a process step, not proof the technology is widely used, and the article is four years old. Newer SK Telecom news was not found in our reading, and a search summary mentioned an IonQ tie-up whose date we could not confirm.
Verizon, Comcast, Telstra and others
The RCR article reports a Telstra and Silicon Quantum Computing 12-month trial, ended in 2025, where a quantum-enhanced machine learning model reportedly matched Telstra's deep learning models with much shorter training time, without published accuracy numbers. It also reports a Comcast, AMD and Classiq effort on broadband network optimization, where Comcast's network chief says results show quantum optimization is practical and scalable, again with no metrics given. AT&T with UT Dallas and a Telefonica demo of quantum-safe communications are described as undertakings or demonstrations with no results. For Verizon, we saw only a 2020 QKD test mention in search summaries and nothing newer, so we say nothing further.
Evidence ladder
| Operator | Topic | Reported | Evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deutsche Telekom | Teleportation | 30 km, about 90% accuracy | Company statement |
| BT | QKD metro network | Projects with Toshiba, Fortinet | Deployment, no metrics read |
| SK Telecom | QKD standards | ITU-T work items, 2022 | Process milestone |
| Telstra | Quantum ML | Matched deep learning, faster training | Qualitative |
| Comcast | Optimization | "Practical and scalable" | No metrics |
Hype check and what to watch
- Hype: "quantum internet is here". Today's links are short, point to point, and need trusted nodes or repeaters for distance (repeaters and memory).
- Hype: treating QKD as a replacement for all encryption. Many agencies lean on software-based post-quantum methods instead.
- Real: fiber that carries quantum and classical signals together, and standards work that makes vendors interoperate.
- Watch: published fidelity and key-rate numbers, distance beyond a metro area, and operators that sell a priced service rather than a trial.
