What Governments and Blockchains Are Saying About Quantum and Crypto
The core worry
Most chains secure wallets with elliptic curve signatures. A large fault tolerant quantum computer running Shor's algorithm could, in principle, forge them. Nothing like that exists today. The full explainer is will quantum computers break Bitcoin and Solana.
Bitcoin
BIP-360 was merged into the BIP repository on February 11, 2026. It proposes a new output type called Pay-to-Merkle-Root that removes the key path spend that creates quantum exposure. A third-party company, BTQ Technologies, said in March 2026 it ran an implementation on its own separate test network; that is not Bitcoin's main network, and Bitcoin Core has not adopted it. A companion proposal covers migration. One estimate puts roughly 6.5 to 6.9 million BTC in quantum-vulnerable legacy addresses, a rough third party figure. One analysis projects activation sometime in 2027 to 2029, depending on community consensus.
Ethereum
The Ethereum Foundation launched a post-quantum hub in March 2026 and a staged roadmap, with coverage describing several planned hard forks (reports say four for post-quantum work, seven across the wider roadmap) and core post-quantum infrastructure targeted for around 2029. Account abstraction is meant to let users move to quantum-safe authentication without a flag day.
Solana
The Solana Foundation published a quantum readiness post on April 27, 2026. Its stance: no user action or protocol change is needed today. It describes researching Falcon, a lattice-based signature scheme (two validator client teams, Anza and Firedancer, reportedly built initial implementations), adopting a post-quantum scheme for new wallets if the threat becomes credible, then migrating existing wallets. The Winternitz Vault is an optional hash-based wallet feature from the developer Blueshift, not a Foundation product. The Foundation's post points to it as an existing option that has been in place for over two years.
Other chains
Algorand has used FALCON signatures in State Proofs since 2022. Aptos has a proposal to add a post-quantum signature option.
Governments and exchanges
Government dates in the deadlines guide set the tone. In April 2026 the Coinbase chief executive addressed the quantum threat to crypto publicly. Treat opinion pieces and vendor blogs with care.
What this means for QNT holders
QNT is a token on Solana, so its long-term quantum safety depends on Solana's upgrades and on how you store keys. See quantum resistant signatures and storing QNT safely.
What changed in the last 90 days
The big items in our sources predate July: BIP-360's merge in February, the Ethereum hub in March and the Solana post in April. In the more recent window the headline for crypto was indirect: the June orders and the 2031 federal deadlines raise the profile of migration. We did not find a new activation decision on any major chain. Quantum progress on the hardware side includes IBM and the University of Chicago's July 30 verified logical-qubit result, which is far from the scale needed to threaten signatures.
Solana, in the Foundation's own words
The Solana post says two validator client teams independently chose Falcon, that the Winternitz Vault has been live for over two years, that Google Quantum AI cited it in a 2026 whitepaper, and that quantum is described as years away. The migration path is: keep researching, adopt a post-quantum scheme for new wallets if the threat becomes credible, then migrate existing wallets.
Three chains, three problems
| Chain | Main difficulty |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin | No central authority, so change needs broad agreement. Old coins sitting in exposed addresses. |
| Ethereum | Many moving parts across several upgrades. |
| Solana | Fast, high volume network needs compact signatures. |
A worked example: what to do this week
None of this requires panic. A sensible low effort checklist: keep long term savings in a hardware wallet, avoid reusing addresses on chains where that matters, keep wallet software updated, and read official chain announcements rather than social media rumors. Compare with storing QNT safely.

Frequently asked questions
Is Solana quantum safe?
Not yet in the sense of post-quantum signatures. The Solana Foundation says no action is needed today and describes a Falcon-based research path plus an optional Winternitz Vault.
What is BIP-360?
A Bitcoin proposal merged in February 2026 that adds an output type designed to reduce quantum exposure. Activation requires community consensus.
Is there a quantum computer that can break crypto now?
No. The threat is for a future, large, error corrected machine.
Does this change what I should do with QNT?
Use good key hygiene and read the risk guides. This site is not financial advice.
Did any chain activate quantum protection recently?
We found no new activation in the sources reviewed. Bitcoin's BIP-360 is merged as a proposal, not active.
Does the 2031 federal date apply to crypto?
No, it applies to federal systems. It is a signal, not a rule for blockchains.
Who is Blueshift?
The developer behind the optional Winternitz Vault on Solana. It is not a Solana Foundation product.
