What to Expect at QIP 2027 in Singapore
What the event is and who goes
QIP is the main yearly gathering for quantum information theory: algorithms, complexity, error correcting codes, cryptography and the mathematics behind them. The organizers' page calls QIP 2027 the 30th edition and lists February 20 to 26, 2027, at the University Cultural Centre, 50 Kent Ridge Crescent, Singapore. It is organized by the Centre for Quantum Technologies, with Horizon Quantum as anchor sponsor. What the previous edition was
QIP 2026, the 29th edition, was held in Riga, Latvia, January 24 to 30, 2026, organized by the University of Latvia, according to Latvian government and national media pages. Reports say the first two days were tutorials and the main program ran January 26 to 30. One source reports more than 140 speakers and more than 440 posters in four parallel sessions, and organizers expected roughly 900 to 1,000 participants. It was the first QIP held in Latvia. We did not find independent write ups of the specific results presented, so we do not list any here. The sources above are logistics, not a results recap.
Things to watch for this time (not predictions)
QIP is where new ideas debut, usually as arXiv preprints that appear weeks or months before the talk. The talk list will not be public until after the November 30 decisions, so these are themes, not a program:
- Quantum error correction and fault tolerance theory, including new codes and decoders (error correction explained).
- Resource estimates for useful algorithms, which shift the timeline for breaking RSA or running chemistry.
- Classical rebuttals and dequantization results (dequantization).
- New quantum algorithms and complexity separations (algorithms).
A theory paper is not a product. A result that lowers a resource estimate can matter to security planning without any machine existing.
How to follow along
Watch the conference site and its linked YouTube channel, though the page does not say whether sessions are streamed. Search arXiv in the quant-ph category for the talk titles once the program is posted. Researchers often post threads on social media during the week. Our news guide and the calendar list other dates.
Source checking tip
Read the abstract and the limitations section, not just the press coverage. Ask: is this a proof, a numerical experiment, or a hardware demo? Is the quantum speedup against the best known classical algorithm, or a weaker baseline? Preprints are not peer reviewed, and QIP talk acceptance is not the same as a verified result.
