Memecoin Scams and How to Avoid Them
Common scams
- Fake tokens: copies with the same name but a different contract address. See how to verify a token.
- Wallet drainers: sites or messages that trick you into signing a transaction that empties your wallet.
- Rug pulls: creators who sell their holdings or remove liquidity.
- Fake support and DMs: people pretending to help who ask for your recovery phrase.
- Giveaways: "send 1 SOL, get 2 back" is always a scam.
Staying safe
- Never share your recovery phrase or private key.
- Use the contract address from the official site.
- Do not click links in unsolicited DMs.
- Read what a transaction does before you sign it.
- Use a separate wallet for risky trades.

How each scam works and what stops it
| Scam | How it works | What stops it |
|---|---|---|
| Fake token | Same name and ticker, different address | Match the full contract address |
| Drainer link | A site asks for a signature that gives access to your tokens | Read prompts, use a small trading wallet, revoke old approvals |
| Fake support | A DM or reply offers help and asks for your phrase | Nobody legitimate ever needs it |
| Rug pull | Insiders sell large holdings or pull liquidity | Check authorities, holders and liquidity |
| Giveaway | Send crypto first and get more back | It never happens |
| Address poisoning | A look alike address appears in your history | Never copy an address from history |
A real world warning from official sources
The US Federal Trade Commission states that only scammers demand payment in cryptocurrency, that crypto payments typically are not reversible, and that only scammers will guarantee profits. The SEC staff statement on meme coins adds that fraud involving them can still face enforcement under other laws, but it also means buyers do not get securities law protections, so recovery after a scam is unlikely.
Worked example
You see a reply under a post that says "official QNT airdrop, claim now". The link opens a page asking you to connect your wallet and sign. Before doing anything: (1) the team did not announce it on its own channels, (2) a real claim does not need a recovery phrase and should not ask for a broad token approval, (3) nobody guarantees returns. Close the tab. Read airdrop scams explained and phishing and fake support.
What to check before you click confirm
- Did the link come from the team or this site, not a DM?
- Does the wallet prompt match what you intended?
- Are you sure it is not asking to approve spending of all your tokens?
Common mistakes
- Acting fast because of a countdown or "last chance" message.
- Believing an account with many followers is official. Check the handle.
- Keeping old approvals active. See a revoke and review routine.

Frequently asked questions
What is a rug pull?
When project insiders sell off or pull liquidity so holders cannot sell at a fair price.
Can a revoked mint authority prevent rug pulls?
It stops new tokens being created, which removes one risk, but it does not stop large holders from selling.
What should I do if I clicked a bad link?
Do not sign anything further. Move your assets to a fresh wallet from a clean device and revoke approvals. Report it to the platform and to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov if you are in the US.
Can I get stolen crypto back?
Usually not. Crypto payments typically are not reversible, which is why scammers like them.
Is every new token a scam?
No, but many fail or are abandoned. Treat each one as unproven.
Are people in the chat who offer to help trustworthy?
Treat unsolicited help as a scam. Genuine teams do not ask for your phrase or for you to connect to a random site.
