SandboxAQ and Honeywell: Two Names Around Quantinuum Ltd, Sorted Out
Why put these two together
Readers often ask which large companies stand behind the quantum names they see. Two come up often: SandboxAQ, because it sounds like a quantum company and came out of Alphabet, and Honeywell, because it is the long time owner of Quantinuum Ltd, the real company whose name overlaps with our memecoin. This page separates what is sourced from what is not. It is a fact sheet, not a recommendation.
SandboxAQ: what it builds
SandboxAQ's own press release (December 18, 2024, Palo Alto) describes a business to business firm delivering solutions at the intersection of AI and quantum techniques, spun out of Alphabet as an independent company. The products it names are AQBioSim and AQChemSim for drug discovery and chemistry, AQMed for medical uses, AQNav for navigation and AQtive Guard for cryptography management. Its main idea is the Large Quantitative Model, which it positions as a complement to language models for problems in science and business. Most of this runs on ordinary computers, and the company's work is not the same as building a quantum computer. AQNav is the clearest quantum link: it uses quantum sensors that read the Earth's magnetic field and compare readings against magnetic maps to find position, including for aircraft without GPS. See the navigation guide and the sensing primer. AQtive Guard relates to the post quantum migration in the PQC checklist.
SandboxAQ: the funding milestone
The same release says the company raised more than 300 million dollars at a 5.3 billion dollar pre money valuation, with investors including Fred Alger Management, T. Rowe Price, Mumtalakat, Parkway Venture Capital, Breyer Capital and individuals such as Eric Schmidt and Marc Benioff, and that an earlier 500 million dollar growth round backed the spin-out. The Quantum Insider's article gives 5.6 billion in its text but 5.3 billion in its page summary, so use the company release for the figure. I did not check for rounds after December 2024. Funding is not proof of product success, see the funding guide.
Honeywell: the relationship to Quantinuum Ltd
Quantinuum came from the 2021 combination of Honeywell Quantum Solutions with Cambridge Quantum, and Honeywell is its largest shareholder by voting power. The company's June 2026 IPO is covered in the Quantinuum Ltd profile, which reports Honeywell voting power at roughly 47 to 48 percent after the listing. The final prospectus gives approximately 47.8 percent of combined voting power for the Honeywell entities after the offering, or about 47.0 percent if the underwriters exercise their option in full. The listing prospectus on the SEC site names the issuer Quantinuum Inc., a Delaware corporation, with Quantinuum (Cayman) as its predecessor for financial reporting, and calls the company a controlled affiliate of Honeywell. It says Honeywell has indicated its intent to remain a strategic customer and partner. The prospectus also states that the 2021 Strategic Services and Supply Agreement was terminated in March 2026, and that in March 2026 a Quantinuum subsidiary signed a new agreement with Honeywell Aerospace Inc. for goods and services related to fabricating ion traps, with an initial term of 10 years. Names and corporate forms vary between sources, so use the filings for precision.
Strategy compared
| Name | Role | Hardware? |
|---|---|---|
| SandboxAQ | AI plus quantum software and sensing products | Applies sensors, no gate model computer in the sources reviewed |
| Honeywell | Industrial parent, customer and partner of Quantinuum | Through Quantinuum, trapped ion |
| Quantinuum Ltd | Trapped ion computers and software | Yes, see Helios |
How to avoid mixing the names up
Three checks help. First, ask whether the claim comes from a company filing or press release, which is stronger, or a social post, which is weaker. Second, check the legal name, since Quantinuum appears as Ltd in common usage and Inc. in the prospectus. Third, remember that sharing a ticker or brand word means nothing about ownership. For more on source quality see how to follow quantum news.
What to watch
- Honeywell's ownership changes and any new commercial agreements, read in company filings.
- SandboxAQ's customer announcements and whether its quantum sensing moves from trials to deployments.
- Whether any partnership between SandboxAQ and Quantinuum Ltd is ever announced. None was found.
The memecoin, once more
The QUANTUM (QNT) memecoin on Solana is a community token. It is not issued by, endorsed by or connected to Quantinuum Ltd, Honeywell, SandboxAQ, Alphabet or any other company here, and the stock ticker sharing the same letters changes nothing. Nothing on this page is financial advice or a price view. Start with the full comparison and the risk factors.
