Trading Bots and Telegram Bots: Risks Before You Use One
How they work
Bots connect to a wallet, often one they create for you, and execute trades from commands. They can be fast, but you are trusting the bot operator with keys or permissions.
Risks
- Custody risk: if the bot holds the private key, you do not fully control your funds.
- Clones: fake bots copy popular names to steal funds.
- Phishing: bots may ask for seed phrases, which no legitimate service needs.
- Extra fees and hidden costs.
Safer choices
Use a wallet where you control the keys, or a mainstream app. See ways to buy, what a wallet is and scams to avoid. Bots are not part of the team's support for buying QNT.
A real incident
In September 2024 the Telegram trading bot Banana Gun reported that attackers had drained funds from user wallets linked to the bot. After first estimates of 36 victims, the company's post-mortem put the total at 11 users and about 3 million dollars, blamed a vulnerability in a Telegram message oracle, added a two hour transfer delay and two factor authentication, and said it would refund affected users from its treasury. The lesson is not that every bot is unsafe, but that when a service controls your keys or sits between you and your wallet, a flaw on its side can reach your funds. Source link below.
Bot versus wallet
| Self custody wallet | Typical chat bot | |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds keys | You | Often the bot, or a wallet it generated |
| Attack surface | Your device and approvals | Your account, the chat app and the operator |
| Fees | Network and venue fees | Those plus the bot's own fee |
| Support | Docs and community | Operator. Impersonators are common. |
Worked example of the fee drag
Made up numbers: you trade 1 SOL through a bot that adds a 1% fee on top of a 1.25% venue fee. That is 2.25%, or 0.0225 SOL per trade, and the same again when you sell. Ten round trips cost about 0.45 SOL before price moves. Fee rates vary, so check each bot's own terms.
What to check before you click confirm
- Whether you are in the real bot, not a clone with a similar handle.
- Who holds the private key. Can you export it?
- Whether it asks for your recovery phrase. If it does, stop.
- What permissions you are granting and for how long.
- Whether a small test amount works first.
Common mistakes
- Clicking a bot link in a reply or DM. Clones are common.
- Keeping a large balance inside a bot.
- Ignoring two factor authentication and transfer delays when offered.
- Thinking a profit chart in a promo is proof. Anyone can post one.

Frequently asked questions
Are trading bots safe?
They carry extra risk, especially around key custody and fake clones. Beginners should prefer mainstream wallets or apps.
Should I ever give a bot my seed phrase?
No. Never share a seed phrase with anyone.
Are all bots dangerous?
No, but they add risk because you rely on the operator and a chat app. Beginners do better with a wallet they control.
What is a clone bot?
A fake with a near identical name that steals what you send or the keys you enter.
Can I use a bot with a separate wallet?
That limits damage, because only a small balance is exposed. It does not remove the risk.
Do bots guarantee faster fills?
No. Speed depends on many factors and nothing guarantees a good price.
