What Is a Memecoin? A Beginner Guide
Where memecoins come from
Dogecoin began as a joke and became a cultural phenomenon. Since then, platforms like pump.fun have made it simple for anyone to launch one on Solana.
What gives a memecoin value?
Mostly attention and community. A theme that connects to a larger story can help it stand out. QUANTUM (QNT) ties its theme to the quantum computing sector.

How a memecoin compares
| Memecoin | Typical company stock | |
|---|---|---|
| Source of value | Attention and community | Business earnings and assets |
| Rights it gives you | None beyond owning the token | Ownership claim, sometimes dividends |
| Legal protections | Limited. The SEC staff has said such meme coins are not securities. | Securities law disclosure rules |
| Trading hours | 24 hours, every day | Market hours |
| Liquidity | Can be thin | Usually deep for large companies |
What the regulators have said
On 27 February 2025 the SEC's Division of Corporation Finance published a staff statement that meme coins of the kind it described do not involve the offer and sale of securities. That does not mean they are safe. It means purchasers and holders are not covered by federal securities laws, and the statement notes that fraud can still be pursued under other laws. The FTC adds a general warning that only scammers guarantee profits.
Worked example with sample numbers
Imagine you put 100 dollars into a memecoin and the price halves. You hold 50 dollars. To get back to 100 you need a gain of 100%, not 50%. Losses are harder to climb out of than they look, and with memecoins a fall of 90% or more is common. The sensible rule is a budget you can lose fully. See how to set a memecoin budget.
What to check before you buy any memecoin
- Is the contract address official? See verify a token contract.
- Who holds the supply? See holder concentration.
- Is there real liquidity?
- Is anyone promising returns? That is a red flag.
- Can you explain, in one sentence, why you are buying and what you will do if it falls 80%?
Common mistakes
- Buying because of social pressure or a countdown.
- Confusing a themed name with a link to a real company. The QNT memecoin is independent of Quantinuum Ltd. See the difference.
- Treating price rises as proof of quality.

Frequently asked questions
Are memecoins a good investment?
They are highly speculative. Many lose most of their value. Treat them as high-risk.
What makes a memecoin different from Bitcoin?
Bitcoin has a long history, a fixed supply and wide adoption. Memecoins are mostly driven by community attention.
Is a memecoin a security?
SEC staff said in 2025 that the meme coins they described are not securities offerings. This is a staff view and fact dependent, and it does not protect buyers from losses.
Can a memecoin have utility?
Some add features, but most value still comes from attention. Be sceptical of big promises.
Why do memecoins move so fast?
Small liquidity, constant trading and social attention can push prices sharply either way.
Is it too late to buy a memecoin once it has risen?
Nobody can know. This site does not make price predictions.
