Buy Sell Ratio Explained: What It Shows and Where It Misleads

Updated | 2 min read | QUANTUM (QNT) community

What the ratio is

Chart tools such as DEX Screener list how many trades in a period were buys and how many were sells. Some also show the value bought and sold. The ratio compares them. A figure above even means more buys, below even means more sells.

Counts versus value

These two views can disagree. Ten small buys and one large sell can look bullish by count and bearish by value. When you read a ratio, check whether it counts trades or adds up money. They answer different questions.

Every buy has a seller

On a pool, each trade is a swap. A buyer of the token is paying with the pair asset, and the pool gives up tokens. Labels of buy and sell describe the direction relative to the pool, not a mood of the whole market. Price still depends on how much each trade moves a pool of a given size, as covered in liquidity depth and price impact.

Where the ratio misleads

Using it sensibly

Use the ratio as a thermometer for recent activity, never as a signal to act. A reading can flip within minutes. If you notice yourself reacting to it, pause and read what FOMO means in crypto.

An example of how it misleads

Suppose a screen shows far more buys than sells over an hour. That sounds positive. But if each buy was tiny, one holder could have split an order into dozens of pieces, and a few larger sells could still outweigh them. The opposite case works the same way. This is why a single ratio should never be read alone, and why it pairs best with pool size and the list of recent trades.

Finally, remember that sellers and buyers are both needed for any trade to happen. A ratio cannot show who is right. It only shows who was more active in a short window, and activity is not the same as conviction. Treat the figure with humility, remember that it is easy to read a pattern into a few numbers, and let slower, harder evidence guide your choices.

Better questions to ask

  1. How large is the pool compared with the trades?
  2. Are the trades from many different wallets?
  3. Does the pattern hold over hours and days, not minutes?

Not financial advice. No indicator predicts the price of a memecoin.

Frequently asked questions

What does a buy sell ratio of more than one mean?

It means more buys than sells in that window, by count or by value depending on the site. It does not say what price will do.

Is the ratio reliable?

It is a rough description of recent activity. Splitting, bots and fake trades can distort it.

Why is price falling when buys outnumber sells?

Sell trades can be larger than many small buys, or the pool can be shallow. Count and value tell different stories.

Which time window is best?

No window is best. Longer ones are less noisy, shorter ones react faster but flip often.

Should I trade based on this ratio?

It is better used as context. This site gives no trading signals or advice.
