How Token Burns Work on Solana

Two different things called burning

People use the word burn for two distinct actions. The concept is covered in What Is Token Burning? Burnt Supply Explained, and this page focuses on how each works technically on Solana.

The burn instruction

The token program includes a burn instruction. The owner of a token account, or an approved delegate, signs a transaction that names the token account and the mint. The program subtracts the amount from that account's balance and subtracts the same amount from the mint's recorded supply. The tokens cease to exist. Supply is read from the mint, which is why the number shown on explorers drops after a burn. Background on mints is in What Is a Token Mint and Token Supply on Solana.

Sending to a dead address

The alternative is a normal transfer to an address nobody is believed to control. The tokens move to a different token account, so the mint's supply is unchanged. They are effectively out of circulation if the destination really is unspendable, but it is a claim about key custody, not a change in the ledger's supply figure. If someone held that key, the tokens could return to circulation.

Why a burn is final

A burn reduces existing supply. New tokens can only be created by minting, which needs the mint authority. If that authority has been revoked, as explained in How Token Authorities Work on Solana, supply cannot be increased again. For QNT, the mint authority was verified as revoked on-chain on 2026-10-08.

How to verify a burn

  1. Open the transaction in an explorer and look for a burn instruction in its details, see How to Read a Solana Transaction on an Explorer.
  2. Check the token's current supply on its mint page and compare it with the launch supply.
  3. Confirm that the account whose balance dropped matches the claim.

QNT had a launch supply of 1,000,000,000 and the page QUANTUM (QNT) Tokenomics shows the current figures: 55,737,438 burnt, 5.57% of supply, as of 2026-10-11. Use How to Use Solscan to Check a Solana Token to check them yourself.

Limits of burning

A smaller supply does not by itself raise value, and a burn says nothing about price. Treat any burn claim as something to verify, not trust.

It also helps to separate the technical event from the announcement. A project may post that it burned tokens, but the ledger is the record. A genuine burn leaves a transaction you can open and a supply figure you can compare. If neither can be found, the claim has not been demonstrated.

Remember too that burning is a choice by whoever controls the tokens. Holders can burn their own balance, and a project can burn tokens it holds, but nobody can burn another holder's tokens without that holder's authority. This is a useful check on claims that a stranger can erase or seize your balance.

Frequently asked questions

What does the burn instruction do?

It destroys tokens from a token account and reduces the mint's total supply by the same amount.

Is sending tokens to a dead address a real burn?

It removes them from circulation in practice if the address is truly unspendable, but the mint supply does not change and the tokens still exist.

Can burned tokens be recovered?

No. A burn permanently destroys them. New tokens could only be created through minting, which requires the mint authority.

Who can burn tokens?

The owner of the token account, or a delegate they approved. Burning from someone else's account is not possible without that authority.

How do I check how much was burned?

Compare the current supply on the mint page with the launch supply, and inspect the burn transactions on an explorer.

Do burns make a token more valuable?

Not automatically. This site makes no claims about price, and a lower supply is only one factor among many.
