What Is Tokenomics? A Beginner's Guide
What tokenomics covers
- Supply: how many tokens exist and whether more can be created. See mint and supply.
- Distribution: who holds the tokens at launch and later. See holder distribution.
- Supply changes: minting, vesting unlocks or burning.
- Utility and rules: anything the token is actually used for, which for most memecoins is nothing beyond community and trading.
Questions worth asking
- Can anyone mint more tokens? A revoked mint authority means no.
- Can wallets be frozen? A revoked freeze authority means no.
- Do a few wallets own most of the supply?
- Is there real liquidity, and who controls it?
QNT as an example
QNT launched on pump.fun with a supply of 1,000,000,000 and 6 decimals. Its mint authority, freeze authority and metadata update authority are revoked, and it uses the Token-2022 program. Those are facts you can confirm yourself with Solscan. The full breakdown is in QUANTUM (QNT) Tokenomics.
The limits of tokenomics
Good-looking tokenomics do not create demand. A memecoin has no cash flows, no backing and no promise, and its price is driven by attention. Never treat a tidy supply table as a reason to invest. Read Memecoin Risk Management first.
It also helps to separate facts from stories. A fact is something you can read from the chain, such as supply, authorities and top holders. A story is anything about future plans, partnerships or price. Facts can be checked in minutes. Stories can change or be false, so give them less weight, especially when they come from accounts that profit if you buy.
A worked example: reading a tokenomics table
This is an invented table to practice with. A token launches with 1,000,000,000 supply. 80 percent sits in a trading pool, 15 percent is held by early buyers and 5 percent is held by the creator. Authorities are revoked. That tells you: nobody can mint more (supply is capped), no wallets can be frozen, and the creator's 5 percent is 50,000,000 tokens. What it does not tell you is whether the creator will sell. If the pool is $20,000 deep, the maths in the price impact calculator shows that a 50,000,000 token sale could move the price a lot. Tokenomics gives you the scene, not the ending.
Red flags and green flags
| Check | Lower risk sign | Higher risk sign |
|---|---|---|
| Mint authority | Revoked | Active, the owner can create more |
| Freeze authority | Revoked | Active, wallets can be frozen |
| Token program extensions | Plain metadata only | Transfer fees, permanent delegate or hooks you did not expect |
| Top holders | Spread out, mostly pool | One or a few wallets with large shares |
| Liquidity | Deep compared with market cap | Tiny pool under a large cap |
Solana's Token-2022 program offers optional extensions including a transfer fee, a permanent delegate that keeps authority over tokens, non-transferable tokens and transfer hooks. None are bad by themselves, but some change who has power over your tokens. Read Token-2022 Extensions Explained for Holders and How Token Authorities Work on Solana.
Common mistakes
- Treating a clean supply table as evidence of demand.
- Counting "burns" as a plan. A burn is a one-time event unless the rules say otherwise.
- Skipping the pool, which is often the largest "holder".
- Reading marketing claims instead of the chain. Start with How to Read a Token's On-Chain Health.
How to check it yourself
- Open the mint on Solscan and write down supply, decimals and authorities.
- Check holders with How to Read Token Holder Distribution.
- Read the project's own claims last, and discount anything that cannot be checked.

Frequently asked questions
What does tokenomics mean?
It is short for token economics: the rules for a token's supply, distribution and any burns, unlocks or incentives.
Do good tokenomics make a token safe?
No. They can remove some risks, such as extra minting, but memecoins stay highly speculative with no guaranteed value.
What are QNT's tokenomics?
QNT started with 1,000,000,000 tokens, 6 decimals and revoked mint, freeze and metadata update authorities. Some supply has been burned.
Where can I verify tokenomics?
Use a blockchain explorer such as Solscan to read supply, authorities and top holders directly from the chain.
Does a fixed supply make a token valuable?
No. A fixed supply only limits dilution. Value depends on demand, and memecoins have no guaranteed demand.
What is a permanent delegate?
A Token-2022 extension that gives an account lasting authority over tokens for a mint. It is a power you should understand before holding such a token.
What is the difference between tokenomics and a whitepaper?
Tokenomics are the supply and distribution rules, which can be checked on-chain. A whitepaper is a document of claims and plans.
Are all tokenomics numbers on-chain?
Supply, authorities and holder balances are on-chain. Plans, locks held off-chain and promises are not.
